climate change

so since we're talking about the new year....i think the environment and climate change is the most important issue right now. i'd love to hear how all of you are contributing to conserving energy, now and throughout the year. here's what heath and i are doing:
- only public transportation, we don't own a car
- we just bought energy efficient & smaller appliances for our kitchen
- we stopped buying bottled water and have switched to tap water
- i don't eat any meat!!!! which is the largest cause of global warming, more than transportation! and heath has cut down significantly
- we try to eat local/organic produce whenever available
- we recycle
- we reuse what we can
- we only use natural, biodegradable cleaners
- most of my cosmetics are natural and synthetic-free...i'm working on all of them
- we switched to wind energy through our electric company
- we turn off lights when we leave the room
- we bring our own grocery bags to the store

these are just some things i can think of off the top of my head....i will definitely be adding to this list. can't wait to hear what everyone else is doing!

here is a link to a startling, but very important video:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=FDbtu_m_V1o

Great job Sarah and Heath. May the Force be with you.

I am encouraging Trey to do his science project on the effects of our food consumption on our health and the health of the planet.

brown noser?

what's that???

on the first day of the new year, Cau 5 ( Ba Thanh) asked Ma Hai to go vegetarian.
That's big. I also asked her to switch. And she's doing it.
who's next?
our family is known all over the world for having the kindest heart, helping others....the biggest gift is the gift of life, so nobody has to suffer for us.
there is sacrifice, no doubt.
changing an old habit is very hard, but our Earth needs us to change to exist.

can somebody explain brown noser to Me Ha?

sarah-mai said...

europe is so much more advanced than us when it comes to the environment...i hope we can catch up with them with our new president.

a brown noser is like teacher's pet, a kiss ass, an Eddie Haskell. here is the exact definition:

–verb (used without object)
1. to curry favor; behave obsequiously.
–verb (used with object)
2. to seek favors from (a person) in an obsequious manner; fawn over.
–noun
3. Also, brown-noser. a toady; sycophant.

so it's a slang word!!!

ely said...

Lily,
A brown noser is someone who has their nose up someone's ass so far it becomes brown! It is a common term here. Sarah was being polite with her definition. I'm sure the French have a similar term.

ely said...

Yes it's slang!

Laure said...

Well, that's a new word in my vocabulary!!! :)

question: has france gotten rid of all the plastic bags in the supermarkets now? i heard they were banning them in europe...true?

Laure said...

It depends on the supermarket... But I think most of them had

Hi Sarah

From the french translation we understand that "Heath has reduced significantly". So sorry about that. Another side effect of global warming ? Or is it the weggy diet ?

sarah-mai said...

michel - he has reduced due to a more veggie-friendly diet, however, he still resembles Shrek.

templin said...

OK!!!
We are trying to save the planet here people.
So far the only progress we have is that the french have enriched their vocabulary with yet another english slang term and that Heath still resembles Shrek with a weggy.

Well, i guess Ma Hai wins the veggie "queen of the day" award.

Let's get on board here!!!!

Di Ha,
Brown noser = lèche cul

Laure said...

ok ok, here is what I do, but I'm ashamed because I don't think it's enough, but it's kind of hard since I'm in Paris...
- I recycle
- I always turn off the light when I'm not in the room
- I try not to waste water
- I don't buy bottled water
- I keep papers and cardboard that I find (mostly on the street but also in from of supermarkets!) for my artworks
- I don't use any cosmetics so it's easier :)

Well, I think that's all...

Nhu Ha said...

enfin , somebody lights my mind

thank you chi Ngoc

sarah-mai said...

laure - i'm always afraid i'm not doing enough...but every little bit helps. at least you're aware of global warming. so many people here are completely uneducated about it :( it's changing, but soooo slowly.

sarah-mai said...

oh by the way, at the moment i'm eating one of my mom's all natural, organic, vegan blackberry jam & toasted coconut cookies....yum.

ely said...

OK I'll tell you what we are doing to save the planet, but I don't want to be reduced significantly nor do I want to be called a brown noser or a leche cul! So give me a break. We are doing all the things you've mentioned already except the wind power, we have no control there. Our light bulbs are all energy efficient, we stopped buying bottled water,we recycle,we programed our thermostat to regulate our heat only when we need it most, but most of all we are aware of the problems and make an effort. As you know we could never give up our cars living in the middle of nowhere but I would certainly like to. Our new business promotes recycling by selling cloth bags to use each time the customers return. I hope they return a lot.
